Debate Club by Thomas N (Week Ending 20th May 2022)

The debate for this week circulated around whether Augustus Caesar was the most influential figure in the history of humanity. The proposition comprised of Deniz D, Thomas N and Aryan R who were battling against the opposition of Emmerson D, Adam H, Oliver G, Oliver L, and Taylor T.

To start off the debate, the proposition brought up the points that the Roman Empire was made stable by Augustus and that a lot of English culture surrounds the empire as a whole.

Countering their argument, the opposition started by stating how Augustus killed many people and argued that influential figures should be people who fight for freedom.

An array of points were then debated, ranging from further examples of Roman culture and civilisation being present in the modern world and how more recent figures have had more of an impact and hence more influence.

Towards the end of the debate, the question of acceptability was looked upon and how that might impact their influence. In closing, both sides  summarised their points throughout the debate before the opposition were granted victory with Oliver Long gaining star debater for the points he raised during the debate.
