Whilst still receiving the support and academic guidance boys have come to expect at Newcastle School for Boys, our sixth formers are introduced to a more independent, self-directed style of learning that will prepare them for university or the working world.

Pupils are supported throughout their learning by dedicated teachers who will help them to reach their full potential.

Sixth Form Diploma

The Sixth Form offers a full range of A level subjects, with over 20 to choose from as well as a growing range of vocational qualifications such as Cambridge Technicals. We recommend that boys go onto study three subjects. These subjects make up part of our Sixth Form Diploma that all of our sixth for pupils undertake, launched for September 2019. The diploma is structured around three core aims:

• Academic excellence
• Excellent character
• Skills development

At the heart of the diploma is the pursuit of academic excellence in their three chosen qualifications from the wide range of subjects offered. This is supplemented by an academic extension component to allow boys to boost their qualifications, that sees them complete an independent learning programme specifically tailored to their interests, skills and ambitions.

The second strand of the diploma will sees complete a range of activities that focus on their character and personal development. This strand encourages participation in the wider school and local community through the attributes and virtues found within the school’s character compass.

The final strand of the diploma focuses on the development of skills, particularly in terms of employability, that the boys will need for their future Higher Education options and potential careers.

The diploma is structured in a manner that will allow the boys to choose options and strands that are specifically tailored to their own interests relating to personal growth and academic development. Through this comprehensive programme, boys will continue to progress, discover new skills and be fully prepared for life in the world beyond school.

Academic Requirements

An academic requirement for entry into our Sixth Form is a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 5 or above although, in reality, the majority of our students significantly exceed this requirement.
