Futures

Pupils at Newcastle School for Boys benefit from quality, wide-ranging support through our school Futures function. 

 

Senior School Futures support includes: 

  • Visiting speakers from industry on a range of careers, previously including law, medicine, accountancy, The Army, engineering, architecture, manufacturing, and sports 
  • A Year 10 and 11 lunchtime club on Preparation for Medicine and Dentistry
  • Year 11 post-16 options sessions, advice, guidance and support sessions, including individual careers interviews 

 

Sixth Form Futures Support includes: 

  • Information, support and advice with the UCAS application process including: 
    • Personal Statement advice and support 
    • Early entry application support such as Oxbridge, medicine, veterinary science, and dentistry 
    • Mock tests for entry requiring completion of a test eg MAT and ENGAA 
    • Advice on what to look for on a university open day 
    • Attending a university open day 
    • Responding to offers, and what to consider when choosing your ‘Firm’ and ‘Insurance’ choice

 

  • Information, support and advice on Apprenticeships and Degree Apprenticeships including: 
    • Information about the structure of Degree Apprenticeships 
    • Information on where to find Apprenticeship and Degree Apprenticeship vacancies 
    • Information and updates about the timing of the vacancies 
    • Application support and advice 
    • Attending informative events such as the National Apprenticeship Show 

 

  • Information, support and advice on studying overseas, including: 
    • Information and advice about studying in the USA, examining the college system 
    • Support with the application process 
    • Information, support and advice on applying for sports scholarships including in the USA 

 

  • Information, support and advice on interview skills, such as: 
    • Interview skills day with external interviewers, which provides an invaluable experience to practice their skills in a ‘low stakes’ environment, and to gain feedback to further develop their skills. 
    • Information, support and guidance on what makes a successful interview 
    • Information, support and advice on how to answer interview questions in a SMART format 

 

  • Information, support and advice on work experience: 
    • Advising pupils on how to successfully source a placement
    • Preparing students for their placement 
    • Advising students on how to make the most of their placement 
    • Advising students on how to reflect on their placement and identify the transferrable skills gained
