Tom Palmer, Patron of Reading

We recently welcomed Tom Palmer our Patron of Reading to the infant, junior and senior sites at Newcastle School for Boys.

We enjoyed a brilliant day with Tom including two assemblies, activities with Year 2 and Year 6 and Tom getting the chance to indulge one of his passions by joining rugby training with Year 3 and 4 at Northern RC.

Boys were delighted to meet Tom and share with him their love of reading and he was genuinely interested in their thoughts about what we might do with him this year and beyond.  Tom has over thirty books published including books that have been translated into other languages.  His themes of sport, friendship, war, history, ghosts and adventure is right up our reading street.  Tom has travelled all over the world and was recently in Sweden at a book festival.   He can now add Newcastle to his list of places where children think he is a great writer and a really super guy.

Following on from Tom Palmer’s visit before half term, we are delighted to announce some further news regarding our collaboration with Tom this year as our Patron of Reading.

Tom is currently working on some short historical novels for children set in Anglo- Saxon times and other periods. Tom has invited boys in Year 3 to 6 to read his book in draft form and offer their feedback and thoughts to him. The books will be arriving mid-November and boys will be spending time with their class teachers reading and discussing the books. Tom is then coming back to see us later in November to meet with the boys and get their thoughts about what he has written. We think this is another fantastic opportunity for the boys to read for pleasure and enjoyment and hopefully make a contribution to the finished books before they hit the bookshelves. We will let you know more about it once Tom has come and worked with us.
