Year 12 Operating Theatre Live event

Report by Anish D (Year 12)

On Tuesday, we travelled to Heaton Manor School to spend the day participating in an event called Operating Theatre Live, as once seen on Dragon’s Den.

Starting off the day was the theoretical aspect, learning about the peripheral and central nervous systems. After this we took the roles of anaesthetists, making an anaesthetic to give to a prosthetic patient.

We then moved onto studying the brain. To truly see how all the nerves connected to the brain, we dissected a whole pig’s head. This was an extremely helpful opportunity because, whilst we learn about the nervous system, we never get to see and experience a nerve this close up.

After this we moved onto the respiratory and circulatory system.  Finally, to finish a great day, we were shown a digestive tract exposing the small and large intestines, the gall bladder, stomach and oesophagus. It was another amazing thing to see in real life and highlighted how complex and large the digestive system is.

A huge thank you to our teacher, Mrs Merrifield and Heaton Manor School, who hosted the event for providing us with the opportunity to do this.
