Year 10 Maths Feast

On Wednesday, a team of Cameron B, Cole C, George H and Lewis R, travelled to Morpeth to take part in a Year 10 Maths Feast.

This is an enjoyable and challenging team competition testing mathematical, team-working and communication skills. The Further Mathematics Support Network has been running this competition for a number of years and designed the Maths Feast to support pupils in developing their problem-solving skills, as well as promoting further study of Mathematics at A level and beyond. During the afternoon, the team was tested in solving algebraic problems as well as geometrical reasoning. Just to give you an idea of the types of questions involved, have a go at this one:

There are six rabbits in a hutch. Only one is male.
The average weight of a rabbit in the hutch is 2 kg.
The male rabbit weighs 1.6 kg.
N is the average weight of the female rabbits in kilograms.
What is the value of N?

After a challenging afternoon, the team was delighted to have finished in first place overall, winning the regional competition.  An outstanding achievement by all involved.
