World Book Day

In celebration of World Book Day, the Senior School held a tutor book quiz for boys in Years 7 to 10 and ended up with a tie between 10SN, 7QS and 8TM all getting 20/20. Well done to all those form groups.

We were joined by the fantastic author Darren Simpson. Darren spent the whole morning at the Senior School, firstly presenting to boys in Years 7 to 9 talking about his book Furthermoor and The Memory Thief’s, and discussed where he gets his inspiration from for his books. The session finished with a very exciting quiz and Q & A session with the boys providing some great questions to the author.

They also had the opportunity to get their books signed. Darren then completed a creative writing workshop with the boys in Year 7 linked to his book Scavengers. The pupils were split into groups with the task of creating their own ideas and characters for writing a story.

Meanwhile, every boy from Nursery to Year 6 had an author/book visit of some kind. Boys in Early Years took part in a live author event with George Webster, Years 1-4 visited Seven Stories and took part in a wonderful story workshop, and boys from Nursery to Year 4 had the option of dressing up as a character from a fairytale.

After his morning in the Senior School, Years 5 and 6 were joined by Darren Simpson, who came and spoke to the boys about his history as an author and the things that inspire him to write. He then signed books for boys who had bought them and had an extensive Q&A session. The most interesting fact, according to Year 5, was that he once crashed his car when dreaming of the book he was about to write – so be careful out there!

On Friday, and also in celebration of World Book Week, Adam Bushnell also visited Year 5 and did a session all about writing, finding inspiration for story settings and how to create an exciting environment. He chose as his inspiration the Amazon Rainforest, to tie in with Year 5’s South and Central America topic in Humanities.

The boys watched some fantastic stimuli to prompt their ideas about how it would look, smell, sound and taste in the rainforest, and even used Adam’s fantastic smelling boxes to develop their ideas further!
