Whole School Story – Sir Kirby and the Dragon
Chapter One
Once upon a time, in a land far away, there lived a brave and bold knight named Sir Kirby and his horse, Jeremy. One cold, dark and dreary evening Sir Kirby and Jeremy were riding through the village of Oroborus. Suddenly, Sir Kirby heard a piercing scream coming from deep within the nearby forest. Instantly he knew he must try to help whoever had made that sound! He turned Jeremy around and rode at great speed towards the forest.
Soon they were engulfed by trees, and as they went deeper into the forest all around them became darker and terrifying thunder clouds rolled above them. After what seemed like hours, Kirby and Jeremy found themselves in a clearing. Ahead was a cave as dark as night with an opening that looked like the jaws of a monster. As they approached the entrance a low grumbling sound came from within. Jeremy stopped, rearing up on his back legs and refusing to go on any further. Just then, the most frightening sight emerged from the darkness and growled, ‘Be gone with you, the Princess is mine!’ Instantly Sir Kirby drew his sword and spoke: ‘If you spare the Princess I will let you live.’ Just then the Princess emerged from the mouth of the cave. She turned to Sir Kirby. “Please help me!” she cried. “I’m not very tasty”, she said pleadingly to the dragon. The dragon ignored her, instead turning and slamming his tail at Sir Kirby and Jeremy. Sir Kirby drew his lance and plunged it in to the eye of the dragon. Blood oozed from its eye but yet it remained standing.
Chapter Two
The Dragon pulled out Sir Kirby’s lance and threw it into the mouth of the cave with a loud clang on the floor. The dragon roared in pain and hit its head against the dark scorched trees. Sir Kirby yanked his sword out of its sheath and yelled to the Princess, ‘Go, run and escape whilst you still can!’ The Princess ran and ran until she couldn’t see Sir Kirby and the Dragon. She hid behind a tall wide mossy tree gasping with fear and loneliness. Meanwhile, the dragon breathed scorching hot fire with dancing yellow and red flames. Sir Kirby blocked it with his shield which began to melt and glow red like scorched lava. Sir Kirby threw the shield which scraped the side of the dragon’s head. He followed this up with a blow to the belly. The dragon roared in pain and retaliated by snapping with his giant jaws. Meanwhile, the Princess was pounding the shadows feeling safer because of the handsome, brave and bold knight Sir Kirby. He was fighting heroically for her safety.
Chapter Three
Injured and in pain, the dragon thrashed wildly about its lair, spewing flames and turning the edges of stones to ash. In the chaos, the bold knight attempted to destroy his attacker. Sir Kirby thrust his melting shield towards the dragon’s open jaws, hoping to block the gigantic teeth and give himself a chance to rescue the Princess. Sensing attack, the ill-fated dragon snapped its deadly jaws together, crushing the shield and Sir Kirby’s right thumb. The knight screamed in agony as he gazed at his damaged digit. Despairingly, the Princess wept. ‘Oh no, oh no! My fate is sealed! My hero is disarmed!’ she wailed, inconsolably. ‘Fear not, oh maiden!’ cried Sir Kirby, as he heroically grabbed a large rock from the floor of the cave. With all his might, the fearless and selfless knight flung the sharp rock towards the one remaining eye which the dragon was able to use.
Chapter Four
The rock plunged into the air and hit the dragon’s eye. The dragon screamed in agony and let out a fiery stream from his mouth. Sir Kirby’s armour rattled under the deafening noise. The Princess’ ears were screaming; the noise was unbearable. She let out a scream. The dragon heard this and clambered towards the noise. Sir Kirby jumped onto the dragon’s back. ‘You are unwise,’ the dragon exclaimed. ‘You can talk?’ questioned Sir Kirby. ‘Ha ha ha! I have been talking to you this whole time, my scream just made you hear it better!’ answered the dragon. Sir Kirby pulled out a dagger and plunged it into the dragon’s mouth. The dragon gave out a roar so loud the trees shook in disarray. Sir Kirby was knocked off the dragon. The dragon was just about to eat him when…Sir Kirby’s dagger fell down into the dragon’s heart and punctured it. The dragon slammed onto its side, dead. Sir Kirby got the Princess, she was unconscious. They rode together on Jeremy back to the castle. The Princess and Oroborus were saved, for now.
