Under 16 football v John Spence Community High School

Report by Alex N (Year 11)

In the days leading up to this game, NSB weren’t confident about their first round county cup match against John Spence. They knew they would be up against a good team with a number of very good footballers in their side.

NSB started the game well despite the terrible, windy conditions they faced. The back five were being marshalled by George R and the boys adopted a tactically defensive approach in the first half, utilising their wing backs Zak M and Max M with target man Cole C leading the line. The midfield three, consisting of James H, William H and Dylan R, worked incredibly hard to keep the John Spence players at bay. Going into half-time at 0-0, the boys remained confident.

After half-time we switched to a more offensive 4-3-3 formation and started the second half on the front foot, with the two wingers getting down the line and trying to find Cartmell. The midfield three continued to excel, with Hodgson deciding to sit and sweep up which gave licence for Bobby J and Harper to do damage.

They took the lead through Cartmell with a typical poacher’s finish and later doubled their lead after Harper capped off a great performance with a controlled finish past the keeper. The team defended well and saw out a comfortable 2-0 victory, seeing them go through to the quarter-finals of the county cup against Walker Technology College.
