Top week for 1st XV rugby
The final full week before half term was a week of firsts for 1st XV rugby as the boys won against Yarm School for the first time and then reached the last 32 of the National Vase with a resounding win over Dame Allan’s.
In torrid conditions on the Saturday, the boys battled hard to overcome Yarm 26-24. An early try from hard-running centre Harvey M was met with two Yarm scores before captain Patrick C dived over in the corner.
Winger Jake S powered over for the next try before a breakaway try from Charlie J made it 26-12. Yarm rallied to make it 26-24 but NSB held on for the win.
On Wednesday afternoon, the boys were in National Vase action as they faced Dame Allan’s in round three. NSB started well as Harvey charged down a kick to score before centre partner Fergus S spotted a gap by a ruck to charge through and finish from 30 metres. Dame Allan’s secured some possession and, attacking down the hill, scored three unanswered tries to take a 19-14 lead. Just before half time, Fergus hit a great line before stepping the full back to make it 21-19.
The second half started well as Charlie scored an excellent solo try. He was closely followed by winger Lewis R who finished following an offload by Joe W. Ewan G powered home from 20 metres, before Charlie completed the scoring to make the final score 45-27.
