Well done to Daniel, Freddie, Oliver and Sam in Year 7 for proudly representing NSB at the Regional Finals of the Spelling Bee Competition at Newcastle University on the afternoon of 29th April. The event was organised for the fifth year running by Routes into Languages, a consortium of universities working together with schools to enthuse people to study languages.
Congratulations to Freddie for not only winning the second prize for the North East for Spanish, but also for getting through to the next phase of the competition: the national finals in Cambridge in July.
The boys competed against other schools in the North East for one of the four places per language available for the Cambridge finals. They had to learn 150 words and their spellings in French or Spanish. They were given one minute to spell correctly as many words as possible in front of the judges and the audience. There were nerves and excitement and they all managed to put in a fantastic performance. The standard was high and all four boys agreed it had been a worthwhile experience, which was enhanced by presence of a filming crew. A production team for the documentary for ITV called Secret Life of Growing Up filmed the event as a section featuring pupils participating in the Foreign Language Spelling Bee competition will be included in the programme.
Thanks to the four spelling bees for their tremendous effort and commitment during the different stages of the competition.
