Old Boys update – Max Metcalfe (Newlands, 2011-2019)

I took up an apprenticeship with the Under 18s team at Middlesbrough football club in June 2019, after completing my GCSE’s at NSB.

We train every weekday at Rockcliffe Hall in Darlington and fixtures are every Saturday. We play an extremely challenging fixture list, facing opponents such as Newcastle United, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City. Training starts at 9am with a gym session and stretching, then I train with the Under 18 and Under 23 goalkeepers, where we do specific goalkeeping training.  After one hour of goalkeeper training we join the team to play small sided games.  After lunch I go back into the gym to finish my strength and conditioning programme and I then complete my individual learning plan, which consists of different styles of kicking, match analysis and focus on my footwork around the goal.

The pandemic meant we couldn’t go into the club for over three months so I was given a training programme to complete at home, as well as daily Zoom calls to do gym work with the team.  However, in July of 2020 we were allowed back to training full-time, with the necessary Covid restrictions in place.

As well as football training, my apprenticeship includes an NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Achieving Excellence in Sports Performance, a BTEC Level 3 in Sport (Performance and Excellence) and football coaching badge.

I feel my all round sporting experiences at NSB have prepared me very well for a potential career in professional football. I am really enjoying the whole experience and hope my professional career goes from strength to strength.
