Old Boy update – Bayley Cartmell (2005-2018, Mavor)
Mr Hogarth recently caught up with Bayley Cartmell to find out what he’s been up to since leaving NSB in 2018. You can read more from Bayley below.
I am currently in the 3rd year of a four year Combined Masters in Maths and Physics at the University of Warwick. Prior to the pandemic, I was part of the Warwick tennis teams and had been training weekly with them, balancing playing tennis with a demanding degree and being president of a society. Much of the team training and matches were stopped prior to the first lockdown but I hope to play some matches next term.
When I have returned home to Newcastle I have been playing local league matches for David Lloyd Newcastle Men’s first team for the 6th successive year. Two years ago we were promoted to A division which is the top Division in the North East League, playing first pair for the majority of that time. I also continue to play where possible in the Club Yearly Championships in the summer at David Lloyd, a highlight being in 2019 winning the Mixed Doubles and Men’s doubles with my mother and brother respectively!
Since gaining my Level 2 Coaching Assistant qualification when I was 16, I have continued to be an active member of the Tennis for Free Community Parks coaching scheme in both Gosforth Central Park and Exhibition Park which have run since 2015. In addition, I assisted with the LTA tennis activities at the British Transplant Games held in Newcastle in 2019 and I regularly provide assistance at David Lloyd for mini tennis sessions and tennis camps when I’m home from University.
The support given to me in both playing and coaching tennis whilst at NSB was invaluable and I would encourage boys to get involved in as much sport as possible whilst at school.
