Old Boy update – Alastair Montgomerie (2012-2016, Aldridge)
Since leaving NSB, Alastair has furthered his passion for golf, playing at university and working in the golf and events industry. Read more about what he has been up to below.
Since leaving Newcastle School for Boys in 2016, golf has continued to play a huge role in my life and I play more now than I ever had time to at school.
Having more leisure time at university allowed me to get more involved in golf both competitively and socially, and to further develop my game. I was able to play a few 2nd team games during my first two years at university in the British Universities and College Sport national league.
I then undertook a 12-month placement in the golf and events industry as part of my university course, 8 months of which I completed in Dubai.
During my time there I worked an average of 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, but I still managed to play almost every course around Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which were all fantastic experiences.
The working life out there was demanding yet rewarding, as I assisted with all aspects of twice weekly golf events, but also fitted in well socially with the members. It was during this time away where I was able to achieve a steady single-figure handicap.
Upon returning to the UK in the summer of 2019, I continued playing as much as possible and secured a spot in the second team in my final year of university, managing to win 2nd Team Player of the Year, which was a pleasing personal achievement!
I have continued to play beyond university and wish to progress my game further in years to come.
