Mathematics inspiration lecture
On Tuesday afternoon, a group of Year 11, 12 and 13 attended a Mathematics inspiration lecture at The Northern Stage.
This annual event is always a hit, allowing students the chance to hear from interesting speakers talking about how they use mathematics in their life. This year, the boys heard from Rob Eastaway, a mathematician who is devoted to studying how maths fits into everyday life. He talked about how life wasn’t fair and what they could do to improve fairness in different situations, whilst also giving the audience a chance to get their hands on a chocolate biscuit. Thanks to Louis J (Year 11), who volunteered to help out on stage during this presentation.
Next, they heard from Aoife Hunt, who works for Movement Strategies, a consultancy firm that specialises in analysing the movements of people. A fascinating insight into how each of us really thinks when we are moving in large crowds. Lastly, a crowd favourite, Colin Wright, took to the stage, astonishing the audience with not only the mathematics behind complex patterns and predictions, but he also amazed with his remarkable juggling skills.
All the students enjoyed the event hosted by Newcastle University and each of them got an insight into what the world of mathematics really is all about.
