Exam results 2022

With the new school year approaching and exam results having just been published, I wanted to congratulate all of our pupils who have received their results in the past week or so and share and celebrate their achievements with our school community.

Those achievements are all the more remarkable given the challenges faced in the past two and a half years as a result of the pandemic.

This was a ‘transition year’ for grades (not marking) which were pitched between 2019 and 2021 standards although this must be not be allowed to detract from the very considerable achievements of our pupils and staff

We must remember that Year 13 students sitting A levels and other sixth form qualifications this summer had been denied the opportunity to sit their GCSEs in 2020.  Hence these were the very first public examinations that they had the opportunity to sit.  Nevertheless:

  • Half of all A level grades were issued at A*A and three quarters at A* to B.  Although some caution should be exercised in comparison with previous years’ results, Year 13 achieved the School’s highest ever proportion of A* grades at A level, 23.5%.
  • 19 out of 22 students who applied for university entry this autumn achieved places at their first-choice institutions.  The remaining three all achieved their insurance offers with a number of other students successfully gaining apprenticeships, employment or deferring university entry including two who achieved A*A*A* grades.
  • CTEC and applied business students were also very successful again with 25% achieving starred distinctions and 50% distinctions.

Similarly, our GCSE pupils who received their results yesterday significantly outperformed national results at every level.  Even whilst awaiting a small number of results still to be published:

  • 49.9% were awarded at the top 9 to 7 grades equivalent to the old A*A
  • 81.8% awarded at grade 5 (C) or higher compares very favourably to the national figure of 58.1%
  • An overall pass rate of 96.6%

This cohort too were impacted by Covid and its restrictions during their Years 9, 10 and 11.

As ever, beyond the headline data, there are individual boys and personal success stories across all qualifications and grades.

We are very proud of all of our boys’ achievements and wish them the very best for the next stages of their education and lives particularly those leaving Year 13 and moving onto new destinations and challenges.
