EU Referendum project earns Sixth Form student top marks

Year 13 student, Richard Warwick, 18, has boosted his A Level success with a research project into the effect of the EU referendum on the UK and the North East region.

In addition to his ABB in this year’s A Levels, Warwick earned himself an A grade for his Extended Qualification Project (EPQ), receiving recognition and acclaim for the project from both local and national media. As a result, Warwick has been offered a place at both Leeds and Nottingham Universities.

The project itself, submitted before result of the EU referendum, aimed to make the subject more relatable for the millennium generation, laying particular focus on the impact leaving the EU would have on structural funding and state aid for the UK as a whole, as well as the North East region.

Speaking of the project, Richard said “The subject of the EU referendum has been one of the most, if not the most, significant topics of this year. With all of the information put out there, it felt that there was a risk of my generation becoming too overwhelmed by the subject and them not engaging, as a result. I decided to simplify the matter by focusing in on the one particular aspect of national and regional funding.” “Taking part in the EPQ has been invaluable for me and it felt completely different to my A Level subjects. The process has certainly helped me develop my research, public speaking and essay writing skills, all of which will be essential when I go on to study at university”

The EPQ has seen a growth in popularity at Newcastle School for Boys Sixth Form, with almost half of this year’s cohort successfully completing the qualification.

Mr Alex Newman, Deputy Head at Newcastle School for Boys, said of the EPQ: “Universities have increasing expectations of their applicants year-on-year and they often want to see more from the students than just a strong set of A Level results.” “Through the EPQ, our boys are able deliver a project of their own choice, developing essential skills in research and presentation, preparing them for study at undergraduate level. This year, our pupils have delivered projects in a range of subjects from blood doping in competitive cycling to the effect of support from local charity, Maggie’s, on cancer suffers.”

All are welcome to join us at our Sixth Form Open Evening on Tuesday 15th November, 6.00pm to 7.00pm.
