Pupils and staff at Newcastle School for Boys are celebrating this year’s excellent exam results with over a third of A levels awarded top A* and A grades
Pupils and staff at Newcastle School for Boys are celebrating this year’s excellent exam results with over a third of A levels awarded top A* and A grades. Alongside this, nearly 40% of students sitting more vocational diploma qualifications – part of the School’s unique sixth form offer – achieved distinctions. 81.5% of pupils celebrated being offered their first preference of further education.
The School has seen a big increase this year in its proportion of top A level grades with nearly a quarter of students exceeding their university offers giving them the option on receipt of their results to trade up to other universities and courses.
David Tickner, Head of Newcastle School for Boys, said, “Congratulations to all our students on their results in A level and other courses that they have worked hard to achieve. We are extremely proud of each of their achievements in their studies and beyond. We wish them well as they move on – each as a well-rounded individual – to a range of different destinations, courses, and employment. They have been exceptionally well supported by their families and teachers.
The results vindicate the School’s focus on challenging and supporting each pupil to achieve the highest levels of individual academic progress as well as promoting wellbeing and character development.
Pupils move on to a range of destinations. Many progress onto academically selective courses at Russell Group Universities. Others – no less successful – pursue creative, practical and vocational courses. Some move internationally including students successful in gaining sports scholarships to study at universities in the United States.
Fraser, Head Boy (2013-2024) Results: AAB -“I am happy with my results and looking forward to the new chapter. I am going to Manchester University to study Geography and am looking forward to the trip to Keswick to get to know everyone before starting university.”

The sixth form curriculum at Newcastle School for Boys places great focus on supporting its pupils in their own individual pathways, whatever their interests may be. Whilst many pupils still wish to pursue traditional academic courses, others’ passions lie in more vocational and creative routes. The School supports this through its offer of Cambridge Technical courses in its curriculum, as well as an enrichment programme that affords pupils work experience opportunities, sports coaching and finance qualifications, as well as the very popular Extended Qualification Programme.
