96% of Newcastle School for Boys pupils secure chosen university place

96% of this year’s outgoing Year 13 cohort have already secured their chosen university place following today’s exam results.

The pupils now go on to study at a range of universities across the UK and internationally, from those staying closer to home at Newcastle University to those moving as far at Barry University in Miami. A number of boys also go onto highly competitive apprenticeships or leave education for roles in the business world.

The range of subjects they are going on to study is also vast from those reading Law, Politics and the Sciences, to Music Composition and a number of boys in this year’s cohort choosing film and media related studies thanks to the success of the School’s Digital Media Cambridge Technical (CTECH) course.

Head, Mr David Tickner, said ‘Its always a very proud moment when we come to results day for our Year 13 pupils and to see all of their hard work really pay off. It shouldn’t go unsaid that this particular year group have seen significant challenge over the past few years and the disruption of the pandemic. This is the first set of public exams these boys have sat and they have shown great courage and resilience doing so at such an important stage in their education. I’m also very grateful to our teaching staff who have offered the pupils exceptional support and skilled teaching to secure these results.’

As well as the collective successes, the year group saw a number of notable individual successes including David E and Ahnaf Z who secured all A* and both intend to apply for medicine after a gap year, Louis R who received three grade As and an A* securing his place to study Natural Sciences at Durham University and Tazwar R who was awarded 2 A*s and an A before taking up his course studying Medicine at the University of Glasgow.

The School’s overall results were certainly to be celebrated with over 23% of all grades awarded at A*, 75% at A* to B and a 100% pass rate. Boys sitting the School’s vocational courses equally saw success, again with a 100% pass rate and 50% of grades being awarded at Distinction or Distinction*.
