1st XV reach another Cup final

The 1st XV performed superbly under challenging circumstances to reach the final of the Tom Burrows Cup. The annual tournament, hosted by Silcoates School, Wakefield feature teams playing a round robin tournament of 24 minute matches with the top two teams competing in a final. Due to a range of circumstances NSB travelled with a squad of only 15 and many of the boys were asked to play out of position and did not let anyone down. NSB started with a game against Altrincham Grammar School and, despite soaking up early pressure, Joe Nicholson opened the scoring after a trademark dummy. After half time, captain, Dan Gray crashed over before Nicholson added a second. The final try was a 50 metre rampage by loose head prop, Dan Hails. Joe Cowan landed two excellent conversions for a 24-0 win.

In game two, NSB faced the much fancied hosts Silcoates and lost 10-7 in a tight game, Nicholson again the NSB scorer. After lunch, NSB faced local rivals Kings Priory and came out 22-7 victors, tries coming from Jack Appleton Harry Ash, Dan Hails and Cameron Horrocks. In the next game, NSB faced the Central Yorkshire District side and won 24-14 with tries from Appleton, Ash, Gray, and Will McFarland. This put NSB thorough to the final where they would again face Silcoates. By this point the squad of 15 was stretched to the full and the boys had given there all, however they still helped to produce a truly memorable final. Silcoates started with huge intensity and scored first. They looked like making a break immediately afterwards when a huge tackle by Richard Warwick changed the momentum and, with the very final play of the second half, Matthew Charleton scored to force the game into injury time. Silcoates again scored and with NSB 14-7 down and putting the hosts under huge pressure they were unable to score and the final whistle went. Despite the defeat, the whole squad can be very proud of the standard of play and the physical effort they put into the day.
