UK Parliament Week – Year 5 debates
In celebration of UK Parliament Week, Year 5 spent the week learning about the structure of debates, splitting into teams arguing for or against two distinct motions, preparing their arguments and holding two excellent, well-explained debates. The two motions – “The voting age should be lowered from 18 to 16” and “school sport should be stopped during lockdown” – were hotly contested, with the “against” argument winning narrowly in each case.
Despite at times being required to argue points that they didn’t necessarily believe in, the boys worked hard to produce persuasive arguments that they gave clearly and concisely. The whole class found the debate process interesting and rewarding and, by the sounds of some of the disagreements that took place, we have some budding politicians on our hands!
