Deputy Head (Teaching and Learning)
Prior to joining Newcastle School for Boys in September 2013, I spent nine years as Head of Geography at Yarm School in Teesside between 2004 and 2013. That followed a four-year stint as a Teacher of Geography from 2000 to 2004 at the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle.
In my current role as Deputy Head (Academic and Curriculum), I have direct responsibility for overseeing the quality of teaching and learning across the whole school, in addition to developing and shaping the academic curriculum in the Senior School. Opportunities for expanding and diversifying the provision of courses for the boys now include an increasing number of vocational qualifications, in conjunction with the more traditional academic courses. I still have some opportunities to teach Geography in the classroom and see this as one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. I am also passionate about furthering academic enrichment opportunities for the boys, both during and outside of the school day. I currently front up the Academic Society and organise the Open Lecture Series.
I am involved in a professional capacity with the HMC NE Academic Deputies group and am on the steering group for a regional Head of Departments training course entitled ‘Top HoDs’. I take great pleasure in working with talented and aspirational Heads of Department from across the region and helping them to further shape and guide their careers.
In my spare time, I enjoy rugby and cricket, though as a spectator these days rather than a player. I also pursue the increasingly challenging pastime of keeping fit and regularly compete (or should I say participate!) in local running races and triathlons. I am a member of North Shields Poly running club and Boar City CrossFit gym.
