Spanish Curriculum Summary for Key Stage 5

We will follow the new AQA syllabus

Why should I study Spanish?

Spanish is a leading European and world language.  It is a vibrant and exciting language which is enjoying increasing popularity in schools throughout the UK.

By studying AS level (and potentially A2 level) Spanish you will be able to build on the knowledge and skills acquired at GCSE.  This will provide you with a basis for further study at university – either as a main subject or as a useful adjunct to another subject, such as Business Studies or Law.

AS Spanish will also provide you with an insight into Spanish culture and society which will provide intellectual stimulation and facilitate foreign travel.

A qualification in Spanish will be a strong asset in the workplace in view of Spain’s leading position as a world language and expanding work opportunities in Europe.

What topics will I study during the course?

You will develop your language skills through a range of stimulating contemporary topics. At AS Level these are:

  • Media (TV, advertising and communication technology)
  • Popular Culture (cinema, music and fashion/ trends)
  • Healthy living/ lifestyle (sport/ exercise, health and well-being and holidays)
  • Family/ Relationships (relationships within the family, friendships and marriage/partnerships)

Teaching groups

As teaching groups are small, the speaking examination is conducted by  Spanish teachers rather than external examiners, enabling students to feel more at ease in what can be a stressful situation.  Teachers are available to help individuals develop confidence in all skill areas and achieve their full potential in a relaxed and friendly environment.
