AIMS
The principle themes running through key stage 3 are to continue to improve boys’ observational drawing skills and their understanding of designing a balanced composition. They also look at the human face and figure, work in the style of an artist and develop a further understanding of printing.
SUMMARY OF CONTENT
In year 7 boys work on compositional skills and concentrate on texture by drawing to music using the visual elements. More able boys are stretched by drawing textures as well as using them. They then work with the human figure through observational drawing, then develop it further either through sculpture or other media. Finally they are introduced to new ways of drawing through various exercises.
In year 8 boys continue to develop their drawing techniques and using their imagination produce work based solely on tone, pattern and texture. The more able boys are encouraged to work on more complex designs. They produce a self portrait, followed by a composition based on their own interests. The more able are encouraged to choose images that are more challenging to use while the less able are encouraged more to think about a balanced composition.
In year 9 boys continue to develop their drawing skills by concentrating on tone. They produce a painting based on another artist’s style they have researched. However boys are steered towards artists that will either challenge them, and/or not result in a disappointing outcome. They are introduced to different printing techniques.
ASSESSMENT
All work is assessed using the schools effort and achievement grades with the addition of a plus and/or minus for achievement. Boys usually complete a self assessment sheet where they are asked where they think their strengths and weaknesses are, then targets are set for future work where appropriate. There are several opportunities for boys to see and discuss theirs, or others work, as they are encouraged to see their peers work.
ALLOCATION OF TEACHING AND STUDY TIME, AND HOMEWORK
Boys receive 2 x 40 minute lessons each week. There is an art club at lunchtime where boys can drop in once a week if they need more help or want to continue work. A more structured art club is run once a week after school for any boy where they usually discuss a project they want to work on together. Homework is given when appropriate and boys are given a week to complete it. Homework is marked and reference given to their strengths and where they need to concentrate on for their next piece.
CONTINUITY OF PREVIOUS AND NEXT (KEY) STAGE
Boys continually revisit all aspects of art and design throughout all key stages, such as drawing and painting. However at each stage they are challenged in a different way, such as focussing on different aspects of the visual language and experiencing new techniques.
CROSS CURRICULAR LINKS
In year 7 there are links with music and where possible the two departments work on similar topics such as symphonic/tone poems. Should opportunities occur, such as local exhibitions or displays, links across other departments are made.
