2ndXI Cricket v RGS

Captain Harry A won the toss and elected to bat at Jesmond and his openers made the most of it putting on 68 for the first wicket when Joe N was bowled for 33. Three more wickets fell in quick succession including Matthew C for 38. At 89 for 4 with 5 overs left and two new batsmen at the crease it was up to Alex C and Joe C to rescue the innings and rescue they certainly did. Together they put on 62 runs in only 30 balls thanks largely to Alex C’s clean striking as he plundered four boundaries and two huge sixes, one literally out of the ground. Joe C played his part beautifully with a run-a-ball 17 not out  and Alex finished on 44 not out with NSB 151 for 4 off 20 overs.

The RGS reply was dealt a setback thanks to Lachlan D who has a habit of picking up top order wickets when he removed both openers in his first over. The boys kept picking up regular wickets and with 5 overs to go RGS were 85 for 6 (NSB were 89 for 4). Unfortunately RGS had the same game plan as NSB and kept their big hitters for late in the game. A combination of some dropped catches, too many extras and some excellent batting saw RGS sneak home with 2 balls to spare. Special mention to Will McF who, as he invariably does, provided the games’ two magic moments. Firstly, literally knocking NSB’s keeper Matthew C onto his back with his quicker ball as it cannoned into his chest and then moments later taking, as he describes it, “the best catch l’ve ever taken in my life!”, except it was over the boundary and therefore 6!
