Aims of the Subject
In the Junior School, we provide an informal introduction to language learning, developing children’s linguistic competence.
The teaching of French at Key Stage 2 offers opportunities for children to:
■ become increasingly familiar with the sounds and written form of a new language
■ develop linguistic skills, knowledge about language and language-learning skills
■ understand and communicate in a new language
■ make comparisons between a foreign language and English or another language
■ increase their cultural awareness by learning about different countries and their people, and working with materials from those countries and communities
■ develop positive attitudes towards language learning
■ use their knowledge with growing confidence and competence to understand what they hear and read, and to express themselves in speech and in writing
■ form a sound basis for further study at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
Content
The topics and language learned are influenced by the Framework for Languages ensuring continuity in Year 6 and KS3.
Lessons largely incorporate oral participation where the emphasis is on fostering confidence so that the boys will freely ‘have a go’ at speaking and joining in. We encourage correct pronunciation, careful listening and the acquisition of vocabulary relevant to the boys’ ages and interests. Practical worksheets following on from the oral participation afford the boys the opportunity to practise reading, matching and writing some simple French.
Methods of Assessment
There is no formal assessment in French. However, continuous teacher assessment forms an integral part of the teaching and learning process and is a regular activity. This is done by observing pupils during lessons, by asking questions, talking and listening to them and by examining work produced by them. Pupils’ progress in French is reported verbally to parents at parents meetings and in writing through annual reports.
Teaching Allocation
All classes have one 40-minute lesson per week.
Emphasis on Boys’ Learning
Boys are taught in teaching styles and approaches that are appropriate to boys’ learning.
The lessons are planned to be lively and stimulating incorporating a ‘hands-on’ approach. We make full use of the Interactive Whiteboard for games and puzzles, spoken stories, role play and songs. Enormous variety in the activities allows each boy to become actively involved at his own level.
Continuity
The topics and language learned are influenced by the Framework for Languages ensuring continuity in Year 6 and KS3.
The MFL teachers are in regular contact throughout the school, sharing planning, delivery of the curriculum and organising activities in which Y5 and Y6 get together.
Planning for the Subject
Planning consists of detailed weekly plans. Long and medium term plans are flexible and can be adapted to fit in with festivals, like Easter, and/or important current events such as Football World Cup.
Work is differentiated as appropriate.
Gifted and Talented
Talent is recognised and more challenging tasks are given to those boys who can progress at a faster rate.
Support for Learning
All SEN pupils are included in the lessons. There is plenty of scope for all boys to participate at their own level and to make progress.
Cross Curricular Links
There is opportunity for linking French with Geography and Foreign Culture, counting in Maths, Music – singing songs in French, ICT – using the Interactive Whiteboard and designing posters.
