Newcastle School for Boys has been delighted to open the doors this term to 1 Moor Road South as our new sixth form centre.

It was a real pleasure to show off the centre to visitors at our very well attended Senior School open day before half term.  They were clearly just as impressed as our sixth formers have been.

It’s been great to be able to provide our sixth formers with additional, new classrooms, a private study space - that includes some of the features they will access when they move on to university - and their own social space in the form or a large common room and kitchen area.  And it doesn’t stop there.  Later this year, we will begin installing recording and media facilities in the studio space that is available on the building’s ground floor.

These facilities are being added to a sixth form that is already academically one of the best performing in the country.  Using sophisticated measures of students’ progress from GCSE to A level provided by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring at Durham University, ranks us in the top 10% of schools nationally.

Having been given a very conducive environment in which to study and spend time, our sixth formers have really stepped up and taken responsibility for it.  I am delighted with the pride and care they are showing for their new surroundings.   In creating the new sixth form centre, we were mindful that we didn’t want to fragment the school community.  But what has struck me since its opening in a school that prides itself on the personal and character development of its pupils, is the impact on the sixth formers themselves.  They walk that little bit taller when they come across to the main Senior School site at The Grove and are showing even greater engagement, care and leadership towards the younger boys in the School.

So not only do we have a great new facility that enhances the learning environment and hopefully therefore the outcomes for our sixth formers but we have also added a little unforeseen value in their character and personal development.

The new sixth form centre has brought other benefits too.  It’s allowed for additional space and classrooms as well as some helpful reconfiguration of facilities for boys in Years 7 to 11 in the Senior School at The Grove.

We shall be delighted to show off our sixth form centre and students again at our sixth form open evening on Thursday 16th November from 6pm.   There will also be an official opening of the centre on a date to be announced shortly.
