Travel Plan

The Governors, Headmaster and staff of Newcastle School for Boys understand the need for travel to and from school to be, wherever possible, by environmentally friendly and sustainable means of transport.   The school recognises the importance of reducing reliance on the private car and the beneficial effect this will have on levels of traffic congestion in the general area of the school.   The Travel Plan addresses this issue.
The School Travel Plan sets out measures and good practice regarding travel arrangements for staff and pupils.   Its aim is to bring together policies in a coordinated approach for the benefit of the environment around the school for the future of its pupils.   The school undertakes to use its influence to promote the good practice set out in this Travel Plan and to introduce staff, pupils and their parents to new opportunities for travel to and from school.
The primary objective of the Plan is to restrain private car use for pupil and staff journeys to and from the school by the transfer of a proportion of these journeys to more sustainable means of transport, including walking, cycling, school contract transport, use of the public transport network and car sharing.
The principal objective of the School Travel Plan is to reduce the proportion of pupil car trips to the school from 86.6% in 2006/2007 to 50% in 2011/2012, over the initial 5 years and to maintain or further reduce the proportion thereafter.Â
The secondary objectives are as follows:-
• To discourage private car trips for journeys to and from school.
• To encourage more pupils to walk, to cycle, to use the public transport network or to use a school contract bus or coach.
• To raise awareness of the School Travel Plan.
• To improve the health and fitness of pupils.
• To introduce Cycle Proficiency training for all new pupils.
